Salt Lake City chosen as site of newest Gateway 2000 manufacturing facility
First PCs to roll off line later this year

North Sioux City, S.D. June 26, 1997 - Gateway 2000, Inc. (NYSE: GTW), a leading global manufacturer and direct marketer of personal computer products, today announced it has chosen Salt Lake City, Utah as the site for a new $20 million manufacturing facility.

The announcement was made today in Salt Lake City at a joint news conference with Gateway 2000 senior vice president Robert Spears, Utah Governor Michael O. Leavitt and Salt Lake City Mayor Deedee Corradini.

"We're delighted to make a growing Salt Lake City and Utah the newest home for our progressive company," said Spears. "The selection of Salt Lake City came after an extensive search of the western United States. The community's ability to provide a quality labor pool, a great quality of life for our employees, and a recognized education system, together with the fit between Gateway 2000's values and Utah's values ultimately made the difference in our decision to locate in Salt Lake City. We look forward to becoming part of this community and bringing our world famous cow spots to Utah."

"This is a great match," says Governor Leavitt. "Gateway 2000 is the kind of quality company we want to attract, with its emphasis on values, customer service and quality of life. It's a positive reflection on our state that values is the determining factor in Gateway's decision to expand into Utah."

The new plant will be located on about 35 acres at Landmark at Salt Lake City, a master planned industrial development along the 2100 South Freeway at 5600 West. Construction is expected to begin this summer on the approximately 260,000 square foot facility which will house the manufacturing operations. Gateway 2000 will lease temporary manufacturing space nearby for approximately 200 initial employees until construction is completed on permanent headquarters in the late spring of 1998.

"Salt Lake City is very pleased to welcome Gateway 2000 to our community," said Mayor Corradini. "This announcement represents a major investment by one of the country's most innovative Fortune 500 companies and marks the beginning of a relationship we hope will expand and benefit both Gateway 2000 and Salt Lake City for years to come. Gateway's national commitment to their employees and their communities is as exciting to us as their ambitious plans to construct a new facility and hire new employees."

Company officials expect approximately 500 employees to be on the job shortly after the building is completed. Employment is projected to grow steadily over the next two to three years to eventually reach approximately 1,300 people. The first PC is expected to be shipped before the end of 1997.

"We appreciate the assistance from Governor Leavitt, Mayor Corradini, Utah Department of Community and Economic Development Executive Director David Winder and scores of others who have helped us facilitate this selection process," continued Spears. "Their entrepreneurial spirit is appreciated and shared by Gateway 2000."

Persons interested in employment at the new Salt Lake City facility should contact Utah's Department of Workforce Services at 801-269-4763.
